Celtic 3 vs Huns 0 (19/11/2005) Print E-mail
Written by Steve 'Happy Bunny' MacV

The player not good enough for Ranger's scores his 101st Celtic goal against them. Bobo breaks his duck and scores in a Celtic Old Firm win. McGeady hammers another nail into McLeish's coffin and the Hun's season.

Any weekend which see's Celtic pump the Huns is always a great weekend. A weekend which also sees our nearest championship rivals drop points and leave Celtic two points clear is a fabulous weekend.

Rangers came to Parkhead on the back of the easiest 2-0 victory you're ever likely to see for Celtic in the CIS cup 10 days previously. Given the pressure being put on Eck by the Mint it wasn't surprising that the Huns at least started the game looking like they were ready to put up more of a fight. Indeed the stats show Ranger had 11 attempts on goal to Celtic's 3. However the only stat that truly counts is the fact that Celtic scored three times and the Huns - bugger all.

Ranger's started off brightly and chances fell to Jeffers and Namouchi but given the Huns couldn't hit sand if they fell of a camel these days there was no palpable concern coming from the Celtic support.

Celtic took the lead after 12 minutes when Ranger's gave the ball away to Nakamura who played a lovely through ball to Maloney. His cross pinged across the area, Petrov leaving it to Hartson to put it away. 1-0. The goal came against the run of play and indeed Namouchi should have done a hell of a lot better when Ferguson put in a brilliant cross for him minutes later but he managed to steer his header wide. Bit of a sweat on that one right enough.

While Ranger's huffed and puffed Celtic seemed to be content to hit on the counter and McGeady it was who looked most likely to do the damage. He and Hutton had a great ding-dong battle all day and it looks like these two will be crossing swords for many a year to come.

Ranger's had one other glorious chance when Ferguson again looked to exploit sloppy defending. He charged into the area and made to go round Boruc before either sticking it in himself or lay it off for the easiest of finishes. Now if Douglas or Hedman had been in nets then its fair to say that they would probably have been caught in no-man's land or given away a penalty. Not so the big Pole - with perfect timing he nipped the ball from Ferguson's toe and held on to it. We might well be looking at the finest keeper in Celtic colours for a generation or two.

Half-time came and Celtic could probably count themselves to be going in 1-0 up but within 15 minutes of the restart the game was over.

A half-time bollocking from WGS saw Celtic come out with more purpose and started to play the kind of football that have been delighting the support recently. Nakamura exploded into life in the second half and it was from his destruction of Murray on the right that he put in a cross for Big Bobo to glance the ball into the net. 2-0 and this Ranger's team knew the game was over. Indeed when the third went in just 5 minutes later there was every chance that Celtic could go on to notch another couple. However it seems the Bhoys were content to save themselves for the bigger and harder games that will be coming up :-)

The third came from McGeady, guiding it past Wattereus from a Petrov cross. Some people are saying the keeper was at fault but it was a nice flick from McGeady.

3-0, 15 points clear of the Huns it looks like they can be discounted from the championship race. The battle is truly on between ourselves and Hearts now. WGS needs to ensure that the team remains focused on the task in hand -  given what happened last season and WGS new fitness regime I think its safe to say that there is no danger of complacency setting in.

Hope you enjoyed the past 10 days as much as I have done :-)

Ratings

Boruc  7
Commanding, calm, reassuring. Had one moment of madness that he got away with but other than that, a keeper that the support and the defence have faith in.

Camara  6
Not one of his better games recently.

Bobo  7
Strong and determined and a great goal. Surely he has been forgiven by the support now for his supposed slight at the started of the season?

McManus  6
Got caught out a couple of times and was lucky that it didn't lead to anything but had a fine game otherwise.

Telfer  6
Mr Dependable as usual.

Nakamura  7
Quiet first half but in the second half he tortured Ranger's from the right. His cross for the second goal was superb.

Lennon   7
Roy who?

Petrov  7
Probably happier that the rest of his team mates are chipping in with the goals now, leaving him to run the middle of the park.

McGeady 8
What was most impressive about the young lad today was his defensive work. Looks to be maturing at a fast rate of knots. Final ball could be better but that will surely come with time.

Maloney  7
A tackle which should have saw Andrew's get his marching orders effectively ended the wee man's game. His understanding and link-up play with McGeady was a joy to watch at times.

Hartson  7
Scored the first and worked hard again. Will be interesting to see how Magic and Sutton are worked back into the side with Maloney and Hartson doing so well.

Thompson 5
Was given enough time to make more of an impression but didn't take it. Hard to see how he'll get back into the side outside of someone getting injured.

Agathe TAXI
The player once evaluated by MON at 10 million quid just didn't look interested. Rumours have it that he refused to take part in extra training sessions for the defence since 'I'm not a defender'.
A pity given past performances and the need for more competition at right full-back could have seen him in the side regularly.

MAN OF THE MATCH:- McGeady
