Hibs 2 Celtic 1 (18th Dec 2003) Print E-mail
Wednesday, 05 May 2004

Well what can I say? Hibs were the better team. I think we get ahead of ourselves and then, fortunately, games like this happen to give us the kick up the backside that we need.

It’s the League Cup so not too important it’s the League we’re interested in more than anything. That aside it’s amazing that we can get to a UEFA Cup Final and not beat Hibs all in the space of 7 months!  I thought Larson was lacking something, the ball ran away from him and his usual faultless control seemed to elude him. No talking points in the first half at all, very disappointing display by both sides. The ball was ping pong-ing around all over the place. But once they got the rocket that is MON at half-time, I thought we’d at least see a much improved performance, going one up did the trick when Varga scored in the 56th minute.

Short lived as the lead was, I thought we would be passing the ball around well OK at least keeping possession but it was like the first half all over again. Then Kennedy gave away a penalty and Brebner slotted the kick home. The winner though was an absolute screamer, Thomson let one rip and it literally flew into the goal. No complaints from me about who won. I think they deserved it, they played better, battled and generally looked more interested in being on the pitch in general.

Hopefully MON would have told them in no uncertain terms that that type of performance just isn’t good enough and had them in for extra training as a reminder that these games should really be taken in our stride. Was, however, good to see a few of the youngster getting a run out. Maloney at Sutton’s expense on 50 minutes was lively but not effective. But the likes of Crainey, Wallace, Miller and Kennedy getting more games it can only bode well for the future……..hopefully!
