BENFICA 3 - CELTIC 0 01/11/2006 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Print E-mail

Disappointing performance, and result - combined with Man Uniteds loss away to Copenhagen the group is back in the melting pot. Where did it all go wrong in Lisbon, scene of our clubs most famous victory?

Caldwell wasnt unlucky for second, you DONT let the ball bounce, first rule
of defending. It was a schoolboy error. I dont think we should slate him
though, people make mistakes, he is still young. Games like these will
hopefully help the players in years to come.
We caused our own downfall by defending from 18yd line from first minute.
This not only caused us problems at the back, see og, but it meant that the
MF were too far away from the attack and thus we had no fluidity in our
play. We couldnt get passing game going, even when Benfica sat back
themselves after 2nd goal. This is not rocket science, but simple tactics.

Burns talked about playing on front foot b4 the game. There is more to that
than playing with 2 strikers and 2 wingers. You cant play on front foot if
defence is on 18yd line and MF on 30. Attack is completely isolated.

Our away form left me with no confidence going there
(always hoping you can win), nor does it inspire confidence in CPH. 26 from
33 at home, 1 from 33 away, stats dont lie they say.

RATINGS:-

Boruc - 5 he was nowhere near 3rd goal, and it was 2 ft in from the post.
Missed crosses too.
Telfer - 6 tried hard and up against a lot.
Caldwell - 4 Shocker, he made so many mistakes
McManus - 6 His usual performance
Naylor -8 I thought he was excellent last night
Lennon 5 - not his best game for sure, him and sno were over run against 3
MFs
Sno 5 - looked overawed for first 30mins
Pearson 4 - Though he was dreadful, granted he was asked to play as 2nd
striker for a lot of the game, which mystified me
Naka 6 didnt do a lot wrong or right
Maloney 5 - didnt perform
Miller 6 - nothing to play with

McGeady did well when he came on, but was beaten all ends up for 3rd goal.
Magic, see Miller.

Celtic Fans 10 - Superb to see them, singing at end and shaking hands when
they got beaten. From my mate in Lisbon, sums them up the best
